TOOLS FOR LIFE foundation supports World Water Day
The UN’s World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater every year. The 2017 topic “Wastewater” builds upon previous World Water Days and highlights how the connection between water and wastewater influences the quest for sustainable development. According to UN-Water, over 80% of the wastewater generated by society flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused. Unsafe water, poor sanitation and hygiene cause around 842,000 deaths each year. On Word Water Day, events worldwide put water at the centre of interest.
The TOOLS FOR LIFE foundation supports World Water Day 2017, because it has actively promoted sustainable programs which help to connect people with water, energy and education since its foundation in 2008. This is how TOOLS FOR LIFE helps people obtain access to basic resources that support sustainable development in areas that are extremely in need. In collaboration with its local and international partners, donors and implementers, the foundation has supported and set up many projects of irrigation and water supply, drinking water and sanitation in many parts of the world, namely Africa, and particularly in Togo, Tanzania, Senegal, Cameroon, Uganda, in the last 5 years.
Water sanitation and access to safe water are big challenges that people in many regions of the world are faced with. Without a reliable, clean and accessible source of water neither development nor sustainability can be achieved. Not enough people are aware of this situation and the fact that 663 million people - 1 in 10 - lack access to safe water1. Therefore, the TOOLS FOR LIFE foundation has supported the workshop “Water and Sanitation“ at Fachhochschule Frankfurt since 2013, as part of the summer school project “International Encounters – Social Justice”. The workshop sensitizes students from around the world about how to provide almost 800 million people world-wide with access to clean drinking water and how to ensure 2.5 billion people have access to acceptable sanitary facilities.
