TOOLS FOR LIFE supports the worldwide project “Little Sun” from the initiators Olafur Eilasson (artist) and Frederik Ottesen (engineer). With the development of a small, portable, and powerful solar-powered lamp design, the inventors started a global initiative. The goal: To provide the 1.1 billion people in the world who live without electricity with affordable, renewable, portable light.

Our foundation is joining in: We are actively involved in the distribution of the Little Sun with our “Donate Light” campaign. For every Little Sun that is sold by TOOLS FOR LIFE, we will donate a Little Sun to Arica through our project organisation, for example to Senegal. We are distributing the lamps through our own communications channels, as well as with ROTHENBERGER Werkzeuge GmbH advertising materials. The start of the campaign is the ROTHENBERGER International Meeting 2016, from June 2-4, 2016.

Spreading light and livelihoods: Little Sun puts the power of the sun in the palm of your hand – creating safe, convenient, sustainable light you can take with you wherever you go. But Little Sun is much more than a lamp – it’s a global project and social business that is connecting the world through sharing light.

Artist Olafur Eliasson and engineer Frederik Ottesen developed the Little Sun solar-powered lamp to get clean, reliable, affordable light to the 1.1 billion people living without electricity in areas
known as ‘off-grid’ areas. The kerosene lanterns commonly used off-grid are toxic, and they carry the risk of burns and house fires. Little Sun solar light is a clean, safe alternative. And over a 2-year period, Little Sun saves off-grid users 90% of what they would spend on kerosene lighting.

Currently Little Sun is available in over 10 African countries, including in Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal, and Ghana, as well as in Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan. Little Sun uses on-grid investment to kick-start off-grid small businesses that sell Little Suns, providing funding
for sales agents to receive business starter kits and micro-entrepreneurial training.

Little Suns are sold at a higher price in areas of the world with electricity so that the lamps can be sold in off-grid areas at much lower, locally affordable prices. So when you buy a Little Sun, you are making sure that much-needed solar light gets to people who need it the most.

Using Little Sun in these off-grid areas means:
- Children can study
- Families can cook and eat together
- Businesses can remain open
- People can socialise
